If you have Skype installed and running then it is most likely using up your valuable bandwidth. Skype is able to provide free calls between millions of connected users but this requires plenty of bandwidth and that bandwidth has to come from somewhere.
Skype is engineered to use up bandwidth from users connected to the network and the faster the connection, the better. So if you have a super fast internet connection with tons of bandwidth, you will be targeted more than a user on a slow ADSL connection. You can check your usage with various tools and we recommend that you test with Skype turned off and then turned on to actually measure the difference. We would be interested to hear your results.
Turn Skype Off to Save Internet Usage
If you want to keep using Skype but don’t want to lose bandwidth to their service, then the only remedy is to switch off Skype when you are not using it. Make sure you properly exit the program. If you close the Skype window, the software may still be running, so check the task manager to ensure it is switched off.
When you install Skype it is configured to run at startup. So for most users Skype will be running at all times. To remove it from the startup, you can use the Total PC Health startup manager. Alternatively you can access the startup tab via msconfig. Just type “msconfig” into the quick search box.
By removing Skype from the startup, you will save on your bandwidth and have a faster connection. You can then start Skype only when you need it.

You can also try to test your adsl speed before and after each of those mods in order to monitor your internet speed perfomance .
hmm, i’m wondering how skype can be swtiched off…. In File menu is nothing like “quit app” only “close” which minimalize the skype window but it’s not closing it. Is there any other possibility how switch it off with the exception of task manager?
In order to completely close Skype after you have it running, you need to right-click the Skype icon that appears in the system tray on the right hand side of the taskbar.
From there you can right-click and select “Quit”, which will exit Skype.
